Chloe Rose: ‘We need to have a conversation about racism’
Chloe Rose, the actress who played the titular character in the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black, has spoken out about racism in Hollywood.
Speaking on the red carpet at the 2016 Golden Globes on Sunday, Rose said that she felt that there was too much racism in the industry at the moment.
“I think that people who have made movies have always felt like they have been made for white people and they want to see themselves in the movie,” Rose said.
“But it seems like it’s not enough.
“We have to be able to acknowledge that. “
We need to talk about it and it’s going to take time, and I think there’s a lot of work that needs to be done, but it’s something that needs a lot more people to come forward.””
We have to be able to acknowledge that.
We need to talk about it and it’s going to take time, and I think there’s a lot of work that needs to be done, but it’s something that needs a lot more people to come forward.”
Rose, who played a prostitute in the series, went on to describe how it was difficult to feel like she wasn’t a “normal” person in Hollywood, but said that her experience of racism in her community meant that she didn’t feel comfortable going on the show.
“We all have different stories, we have different experiences, but I think for some of us it’s harder to be comfortable talking about because you don’t want to be perceived as a ‘bad person’,” she said.
Rose, whose breakout film role as Black lesbian Latina star Cherie DeVille in 2010’s A Beautiful Mind earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, also spoke about the experience of being a lesbian in Hollywood after the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke.
“You just get used to it, it feels normal to be a lesbian, you just start thinking about that.
But there’s this thing that I feel like in the last few years of my career, I just have to deal with, because it’s just this constant threat of being accused of being racist and being an abuser.”
And I just want to make sure that I can be myself, and just keep my head up and keep trying to be myself.
“Rose’s comments come after actress Alyssa Milano was recently criticized for her controversial tweets after the election of Donald Trump.
Milano wrote on Twitter that Trump was a “pathological liar”, adding that she had “a very long road to go” to prove herself to her fellow actress peers.
